A Study on the Correlation between Clinical Variables and EEG findings in Epileptics

Abstract
In order to reveal the distribution of diagnosis and clinical characteristics in the patieuts who showed seizure-like attacks and the correlation between the severity of EEG findings and clinical variables in epileptics, first visiting 237 cases who were clinically suggestive of epilepsy at Chosun University Hospital from Sep. 9 1983 to Aug. 31. 1984. were investigateld.
The results were as follows.
1. All subjects ware 237 cases consisting of febrile convulsion 4.2% seizure-like disorder 19-8% and epilepsy 75.9%. The group of seizure-like disorder were divided into hysterical neurosis 37.3%, organic mental disorder 14.9%, syncope 12. 8% and tic disorder 10.6%. There were generalizedseizure 58.9%, simple partial seizure 28.3% and complex partial seizure 12.8% in all epileptics.
2. 56.7% of all epileptics showed EEG abnormalities, and there were significant differences in the EEG abnormality rate of each seizure type, i. e. , complex partial seizure, 78.3%, simple partial seizure 60.8% and generalized seizure 50. 01% (X^(2) = 9.213, df : 2,P<.01).
3. The EEG patterns of the epileptics consisted of honparoxysmal generalized slow wave 61.8%, paroxysmal generalized slow wave 48.0%, paroyysmal localized slow wave 23.5% and nonparoxysmal localized slow wave 20.6%.
4. As to the age at onset, 35.6% of the epileptics had their first attacks at the ages between 10 and 19, 33.3% belowthe age 9 and 14.4% at the ages between 20 and 29. As to the EEG abnormality rate, all age -groups revealed nearly same results, aboqt
